About Pleasant Township
Pleasant Township is one of 12 townships in Porter County. The boundaries would be the same as the boundaries for the Kouts School District. Kouts is the only town within our township. We serve approximately 4,500 residents. It is the most Southeastern township in Porter County.
The Pleasant Township Trustee is Karyl VanDyke. She was put into office in August of 2018 as an elected official. The Township board consists of three elected officers. Joshua M. Birky is the President of the board, Melissa Birky is the Secretary of the board, and Jeff Press is the at-large member of the board. Gretchen Evans is the Clerk for the Trustee.
As the chief financial officer of the township, the trustee pays and records all claims for the township expenses and salaries. The Trustee is responsible for keeping accurate records and following all the financial guidelines that are set out in the Indiana Code with the State Board of Accounts. The board approves an annual budget to be presented to the State of Indiana, Department of Local Government Finance.
The Township provides fire protection through a contract with the Kouts Volunteer Fire Deparment, which includes all residents in the unincorporated area of Pleasant Township.
The Township maintains both Graceland Cemetery (located on State Road Route 8, West of town) and Spencer Cemetery (located on the North side of Baums Bridge Rd and Route 8).
The Township provides assistance to those who are in an emergency situation through an extensive application process. This would include housing, utility bills, medical situations, and other necessities.
The Township serves the residents who need food, through the Pantry, located in the back of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kouts. 507 Rose Street. The pantry is open the 4th Monday of every month from 1-3pm (Excluding holidays). If assistance is needed at another time, call 219-766-3216, and we will be happy to meet you at the pantry.
Park & Pool
The Township offers a recreational park on Sunset St, on the South West side of the town of Kouts. This park includes a wonderful swimming pool open to the public, a lighted softball field, a t-ball field, a baseball field, and soccer fields.
